Category represents the area of your life in Time Planner app, and is the folder that may contain subcategories as smaller areas.

How to categorize areas of life

For every minute spent organizing, an hour is earned.
 Benjamin Franklin

You've probably done something like this as "life balance wheel" exercise. It's when you divide a circle into 8-12 main sectors of your life and rate how well you do in each area. Using Time Planner app you are able to not only rate it subjectively, but to see how much time you devote to each area in reality (under the Statistics tab). But before that, think about what your main life areas are.
Examples:

  • Work
  • Leisure
  • Health
  • Family
  • Friends
  • Charity
  • Church
  • Sports
  • Kids
  • Gardening
  • Home
  • Meditation
  • etc.

Note that anything above might be a subcategory of something bigger, for instance, "Gardening" may be a subcategory of "Leisure", "Home" or "Work" - depending on your life circumstances.

Create categories and subcategories

Quick video overview how to add new categories:

Once decided, create or edit subcategories within the app:

  1. In Categories tab, tap on big "+" button on bottom left. Choose "Category" item.
  2. Set up the new category the way you need. If you choose the parent category as "Root" - it is going to be the main category, if anything else - it will be a subcategory of the chosen Root.
  3. If you have the default data loaded, or you'd like to change anything created earlier, you can easily edit categories and subcategories.

Nesting levels of subcategories

Choose what is more specific and what is more general in your life - and make your category tree reflect it.
